I was listening to the Science Fiction & Fantasy Marketing podcast today. Their guest was author Wayne Stinnett. He had a great soundbite that I thought I’d share, along with a couple short personal reflections that relate.

Paraphrasing best I can:

“A dream is a fantasy until you write it down, then it becomes a goal. Then, you develop a plan.”

It’s almost that simple, provided the dream is aligned with the reality you most desire! I say “almost,” because the hardest part is committing to the dream and living it in action.

Have a dream to be a songwriter? Start writing songs and commit to calling yourself a songwriter.

Want to be an author? Start writing stories and have the courage to call yourself an author.

Same goes for painting. Or singing. Or playing guitar.

The repetition, skills and ability, recognition and results all come after that first commitment is made.

This is where most people give up…they try something for a day, a week, or a month, and instantly start judging their results against what the professionals are doing. Or, they listen to criticisms and feedback from people who aren’t living the dream, either!

Those professionals are people just like you. They started at zero.

The only difference? They’re still living and pursuing their dreams. They didn’t quit.

Don’t let the critics–internal or external–stop you from pursuing what matters most: the permission to dream big and courage to make it happen.

What are you dreaming about? Are you ready to write it down and develop a plan to make it happen?
